🍕🇬🇧 BY PAUL, USEFUL PHRASES AT THE DINNER TABLE... AT HOME 🇬🇧🍔
These will be useful to know if you ever happen to have dinner with English natives:
TUCK IN (=start eating/serve yourself - informal and polite)
- OK guys, dinner is served. We have a lot of salads on the table to choose from so take a spoon and tuck in.🍴
PIPING HOT (=very hot)💥
- Mind the potatoes as they're piping hot. You don't want to get burned, again!
STONE COLD (=very cold)⛄
- Oh bollocks, the chicken is stone cold. Sorry guys, my mistake. Forgot to cook it.
TO PASS SMTH (=hand something to someone)
- Mum, this dish lacks something. Could you pass the salt please? And pepper? Actually mum, could you pass the phone so I can order pizza instead?
HELPING (= a portion)
- Ah we have an American guest, so he might want an extra helping of fries.
SECONDS (= to have more food after you have finished)
- Oh this raw chicken was divine! Could i have seconds, please?
TO BE EXCUSED (= to ask permission to leave the table)🙏
- Can i be excused for a minute? I need to go and be sick.
TO GET DOWN FROM THE TABLE (=to leave the table, usually said by kids)
- Daddy, i can't eat any more. Can I get down from the table and go and watch TV?
TO PLAY WITH (=have a bad reaction to)😷
- Oh no cucumbers for me. They play merry hell with my stomach! You'd be cleaning up a huge mess...
DON'T AGREE WITH ME (=something can make you ill, very polite)🤢
- Oh sorry but grechka doesn't really agree with me. Can i have fries instead?
MY COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF (= what we say at the end of a meal to express our thanks)
Andddd, to Russian men... elbows off the table when eating in Britain!! It's veryyyy impolite to have your face in your soup with elbows spread out across the table and eating at the same time)))
